This is our three router and three switch CCNA Security lab kit that we consider to be the “best bang for your buck” option for your home lab to pass CCNA and also learn CCNA Security and Network Security v1.0 level skills.  This uses the same “lead” router concept you will find in many of our CCNA kits of taking more the more budget friendly (yet highly capable) 2811 routers and then pairing them with an awesome G2 1921 router. This will cover the vast majority your CCNA concepts as well as the bulk of the concepts for Security learning. If you want to get into the more advanced Security concepts or plan to move into CCNP, then you have the option to select to upgrade the 1921 to a 1941 or 2911 with the base or security licenses (or even V-Sec on the 2911 – more info below).  If you go for a security license option, it  will give you one or two G2 routers with BOTH the base and security licenses on the device, unlocking even more features for your certification progression.  This will also prime you and your equipment for CCNA Security / Network Security 1.0 level work and even CCNP Enterprise!

For the switches, the two 3560-TS are capable of running 15.0(2)SE6 IP Services IOS and the one 2960-TT switch is capable of running IOS 15.0(2) Lanbase.  The 2960 can handle IPv6 addressing and can do limited Layer 3 static routing.  To give you added power, we recently updated this kit with the 3560 switches to add some future proofing and to provide the added exposure of running a true layer 3, fully dynamic switch in your lab!

You can use this lab first for your base CCNA 200-301 certification and then for your CCNA Security badge or skill base without purchasing any additional equipment, so it is two labs in one!

The kit comes with the ASA 5505 base licensed ASA (firewall), which is a great starting point for your ASA and the base ASA that will let you complete lab work to learn essential security skills.  However, if you want to take it up a notch into the ASA-5510 we offer that as an upgrade via the drop down with or without the SSM-10 Context Security and Control Services Module.  The best way to think about the difference between the 5505 and 5510 is that the 5505 is a SOHO (small office) level firewall and the 5510 is an enterprise level.  The SSM-10 provides even more capability with anti-virus, anti-spyware, file blocking, anti-spam, anti-phisihing, URL blocking and filtering, and content filtering.

The ASA options are available as the base license version or the Security+ license versions:

If you go with the ASA 5510, we always highly recommend the permanent Security+ license to go with it.  This unlocks a lot of great capabilities that include many more firewall connections, VPN sessions, and max VLANs.  It also unlocks Security contexts (virtual firewalls), VPN clustering, VPN load balancing and gigabit ports.

The permanent Sec+ license option on the 5505 mainly adds more Firewall connections, VPN sessions, internal hosts (unlimited) and max VLANs. It also adds support for stateless active/standby failover.

As an new exciting opportunity and added bonus, Cisco has very recently added two new entry level certifications for networking and cybersecurity.  So, while you are working on your CCNA, associate level certification, you can also use your lab to learn the material for one of the new Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) certifications!  This would also be an excellent place for High Schools to source material for a networking or security foundations class.  This is pretty similar to the old CCENT if you remember that from previous versions of the exam.  Please feel free to read our blog article on this for more details.

We have worked in partnership with Cisco NetAcad instructors and CCIEs to release our kits that are ready for the CCNA 200-301 exam.  This time around, Cisco has released a couple topology options covering their minimum hardware topology/hardware requirements and their recommended requirements and the optimal learning experience. To satisfy the minimum requirement, Cisco is requiring two routers and two switches.  However, our recommendation still is and will always be to run a three router and three switch lab. This is also the topology we write our lab workbook for because we know this is going to best prepare you for the CCNA and real world applications! Cisco does have a small wireless component on the CCNA that will be part of the new exam, but this is simply a generic wireless router that you likely already have at home.  We do however have an add-on option in this kit to add a Cisco Access Point and the labs to support it in our lab workbook if you want to go on a deeper dive into wireless.
